There are commonly cited causes for high blood pressure or hypertension. These include being overweight, smoking, stress, inactivity, high sodium intake, low potassium, alcohol consumption, age and the intake of certain drugs. However MayoClinic.com states that in 90 to 95 % of the cases, there is no identifiable cause. 1 This type of high blood pressure, called essential high blood pressure or hypertension, tends to develop over many years.
